Making Complex Information Usable

Fact Sheets, Infographics, and Media Interviews

One of the most important parts of the campaign was making technical information usable for people who did not have time to read lengthy reports, public records, or developer documents. I created fact sheets, infographics, and short public-facing materials that explained the QTS proposal and related concerns about land, water, electricity, traffic, construction, tax incentives, annexation, and public accountability.

I also gave interviews to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Wisconsin Watch, and The Isthmus, during the course of the internship, helping bring the local QTS fight to broader Wisconsin audiences.

My Role

I researched source material, identified the facts most important to residents, and translated technical or bureaucratic material into clear language and visual content. In interviews, I explained the community’s concerns, the organizing process, and the broader importance of local participation in development decisions. I also created surveys, in order to get an easy read of both internal and external priorities. During the course of the internship, I attended many public government meetings, and gave public comment.
